Assistive Technology

Tutorial Seven

Assistive technologies are devices that can improve independence and maintain and improve functional capabilities that make tasks easier and simpler to perform.

One of the assistive tools that I find useful is the time teller which can be used to set thetime in the way that you want to in order to alert the client so they can achieve and finish a particular task at hand.

It is a very economical tool and is quite simple, handy and easy to use.

It is useful especially for autistic children requiring them to finish their task at a specific time and provide independence and responsibility in finishing a task.

The Internet and online communities

Tutorial Six

Facebook is an online community that is a popular form of social interaction via the website.

Its focus is in bringing people together and participation among their members. This ranges from adding comments or tags to a blog or message board post and video posts.

The services that it provides to its members include chat session from around the globe, links to people and friends everywhere and updated every few seconds on the latest happenings. People contribute by posting their information or any message that they want to relay to almost anyone who reads it.

People use this tool as a form of social outlet and interaction among friends, peers.

Ethical issues arising from facebook are infinite, in a way it is a personal journal of yourself but then it is open to everyone and anyone and they can access you profile from these, it is open to all sorts of exploitation and identity theft. It allows anyone to view all the information thaht is being posted in the web and could be a cause of chaos and problems.

It brings together friends and relatives from around the world as a form of communication in a very fast paced society. In geographic context, facebook is popular amongst teenagers and youngsters.

It lacks the personal touch and social interaction through a technology that uses a monitor and a keyboard and yet its impact has greatly influenced the society and the people in it.

Video Production Sessions

Tutorial Four and Five

You tube is a video sharing internet website that allows people to upload and share videos for personal, leisure, educational or tutorial purposes. It also allows viewers to view, comment and subscribe to a favourite site.

The use of planning and storyboarding allowed us to cut and edit the video that was made for a smooth flow of the story as well as sequence the parts from start to finish in one minute. Firstly, there was a plan on what to video and how to do it and then had to take a few shots of that same scenario, then we had to view the whole video and decided on what to cut and edit and include in the video that our group was making. Finally, we had to include titles and end credits to finish off the video.

Digital Camera use and applications

Tutorial Two

“A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature”.

Digital Cameras offer improved quality and functions as compared to the traditional cameras although digital cameras still provide the same techniques and principle with that of a traditional camera. The varying sizes and colors and styles can cater to anyone’s likes and needs. Digital cameras produce quality images and are fantastic for web usage. As well as the cost of each image produced is insignificant and process time is negligent. On the other hand, traditional film is still the better choice for providing image quality to color and versatility in exposure settings.

Digital cameras can be used in conjunction with video cameras, laptops, hand held cameras and mobile phones.

Some of the ethical issues that may arise from using digital cameras may involve privacy and exploitation and misuse of the technology.

Digital cameras can be used in occupational therapy to provide information in planning and providing tools and devices to suit clients’ needs. It is also a very important reference material to suppliers and organizations for funding purposes.

Flickr.com is a website that allows users to share, upload, and embed personal photos and access to other photos or images relating to a particular topic. Imeem also provides the same features as photo storage like flickr.com.

Optical Zoom – as the word “optic” means that it pertains to lens as it changes its focus and magnification.

Digital Zoom – changes, modifies the image to a smaller size then enlarges the image to make it suitable for a particular frame.

Megapixel pertains to the number of pixels required to create an image.
